    More About Coach Chad Vandervalk

    My coaching practice
Let’s begin with a quote, as all good stories should. “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery Thank you for your advice to me To work against the urge to manage, acknowledge the vantage of the average, and encourage the pilgrimage of the scrimmage. To leave behind the oration, and open up to the frustration of collaborative creation. To follow the rules of improvisation. Say, “Yes…and” add new info listen support save your partners don’t block These are new ways to see what is emerging new ways to be in the midst of change. At least they are for me. To live with arms wide open to community? to those encroaching on my territory? to those seeking to change my story? No, I want to set things in order. Create a plot arc like no other. Shape believable characters whom everyone will love. Deepen the conflict and heighten the tension. Hint at the possibilities that I will mention, …later. Collect the info and get a feel for the big picture. Map it all out, clarifying the problem and identifying all the leverage points. Then, only when the audience can’t stand it anymore, resolve the tension. By revealing the solution. My solution! Control the story, then control the world. At least that’s what I used to think. Now if you’ve figured this out, let me know. Because that is the way I would still prefer to go. But for now I roll with the punches. I act on other people’s hunches. I fill out the sketches made by those living around the edges. Create space for the story to grow. Nurture it. Support it. Encourage it. TRUST the direction it wants to go, even if I’m not the maestro. I think trust is key. For me to trust you, and you to trust me. Trust that I will value your contribution. Trust you will not cheapen, mine. Trust others come with similar passion. Trust that in the end, something good will ripen. So I am working to leave behind the oration, to open up to the frustration of  collaborative creation, and follow the rules of improvisation. Say, “Yes, and…” add new info listen support save your partners don’t block and Trust. These were new ways to see what is emerging. New ways to be in the midst of change. At least they were for me. So, “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” Yes, thank-you Antoine de Saint-Exupery
    Professional / Life experience
After almost 10 years leading non-profit religious organisations I have learned a lot about what it takes to keep people engaged and motivated. Many people are simply not engaged with what they do on a daily basis, and as a result feel restless and unfulfilled. I have a wide variety of experiences and training with degrees in Economics, Philosophy, Divinity, Consulting and Coaching for Change, and Social Innovation. As a catalyst I seek to help people uncover what drives them so they can be more purposeful and passionate about their everyday lives. If you want others to become deeply engaged in what you are doing, let’s talk.
    My clients
Maybe you’ve been performing well, but are feeling unfulfilled and under valued. Maybe you recognise that your team is not fully engaged with what they are doing. Maybe you want to shake things up a bit in your life, but don’t know how to start. If any of these things are true of you, I can help. Together we will figure out what drives you to do what you do, and explore how you can help others connect what they do with what drives them. Life is better when you know how you are making a difference.
